Apply for Internal Admission

Interested in switching your major to Screenwriting? Want to change into the Film, TV, and Media Studies program? Students currently enrolled at LMU who are interested in applying to a program in the School of Film and Television are encouraged to do so during their first year at LMU.

  • The Animation major and minor programs consider applications from all LMU students.

    Students eligible to apply to the Animation program must:

    • Be in good academic standing with no history of academic probation

    Applications will be reviewed twice annually:

    • For entry in Fall terms, applications are due by Easter Break
    • For entry in Spring terms, applications are due by Thanksgiving Break

    Interested students should reflect on whether the major or the minor is a better fit for their academic goals and graduation timeline. Candidates are encouraged to meet with the Animation department and/or SFTV Academic Advising to understand the difference in requirements for each program.

  • The Film, Television, and Media Studies major and minor programs consider applications from all LMU students.

    Students eligible to apply to the FTVS major or minor must:

    • Be in good academic standing with no history of academic probation
    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25
      OR  
      Earn a grade of A- or higher in FTVS 1010 Art of Cinema

    Applications will be reviewed twice annually:

    • For entry in Fall terms, applications are due by February 28/29
    • For entry in Spring terms, applications are due by September 30

  • The Film and Television Production undergraduate major is not accepting applications for internal transfer due to unprecedented enrollment levels.

  • The Recording Arts undergraduate major is not accepting applications for internal transfer due to unprecedented enrollment levels.

    The program does not offer a minor program at this time.

  • The Screenwriting undergraduate major and minor programs consider applications from all LMU students.

    Students eligible to apply to the Screenwriting program must:

    • Be in good standing at LMU with no history of Academic Probation 
    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 to be considered

    LMU students interested in applying to the Screenwriting program should complete the following steps:

    • Fill out the Screenwriting Program Questionnaire.
      • The Screenwriting Program Questionnaire allows the Screenwriting department to track students who are interested in the program and filling out the questionnaire is the only way to request clearance to register for the gateway courses. 
    • Complete the gateway courses (SCWR 120, SCWR 220, and FTVS 1010/1020).
      • These courses have restrictions on them which will prevent many students from registering for them. To request clearance to register for these courses, fill out the Screenwriting Program Questionnaire.
    • Submit your application.
      • Applications are reviewed thrice annually - due dates are February 28/29, the second Friday of Summer Session II, and September 30.

    Beginning in Spring 2022, students are required to complete or be currently enrolled in the following gateway courses to be eligible to apply to the Screenwriting major or minor:

    • SCWR 120 Storytelling for the Screen, completed with a grade of B+ or better
    • FTVS 1010 Art of Cinema
      OR  
      FTVS 1020 Art of Screen Media
    • SCWR 220 Feature Story Development, completed with a grade of B+ or better (can only be taken after successful completion of SCWR 120)

    These courses have restrictions on them which will prevent many LMU students from registering for them. To request clearance to register for these courses, fill out the Screenwriting Program Questionnaire. Prospective Screenwriting students will be assigned a semester to take these courses. Clearance in these courses will be assigned based on the student's classification and when their questionnaire response was submitted. Therefore, students are encouraged to submit their questionnaires as soon as possible. 

    Applications are reviewed thrice annually:

    • Spring application deadline: February 28/29.
    • Summer application deadline: the second Friday of Summer Session II. (The 2023 Summer deadline is July 7.)
    • Fall application deadline: September 30.

    Students may apply to the program during the semester they are enrolled in SCWR 220.
