Incubator Lab

Outcomes - Incubator Lab

It's no secret that finding your footing in the entertainment business can be a challenge. That's why we launched the Incubator Lab, a unique mentorship program for select film school graduates. Whether you're working on a screenplay, short film, TV pilot or documentary, the Incubator Lab helps recent alums take the next steps creatively and professionally by providing resources and immersion in the development process.

The program is co-curated by the School of Film and Television and Film Independent, the nonprofit that champions independent filmmakers and perhaps is best known for producing the Spirit Awards and the Los Angeles Film Festival. Incubator Lab participants are provided with countless educational opportunities and mentorships from established film professionals as they develop their first post-graduate project. Access to benefits such as free casting services, space rentals and use of the film school's production equipment are just some of the perks included in the package.

Though the Incubator Lab is a young program, it has achieved the kind of success that helps distinguish LMU from other film schools. Several Lab graduates have gone on to jobs in the industry while others have honed their creative voices working on independent and socially compelling projects. Case in point: Director Jenniffer Castillo (Screenwriting M.F.A. '12) used the Incubator Lab to develop American DREAMers, a documentary about undocumented youth walking across the country in support of the DREAM Act. In June 2015, American DREAMers had it's public premiere as part of the Los Angeles Film Festival.

The Incubator Lab essentially picks up where the film school's curriculum and career coaching leaves off.
