Message from the Chair

"We tell ourselves stories in order to live,” acclaimed author Joan Didion wrote. I would add: We tell stories to make sense of our lives and find connection with others. Ever since I could pick up a pencil, I have lived and breathed storytelling. No surprise since my grandfathers and father were film business pioneers; movies were the glue that bonded my family. The DNA of screenwriting is in my blood, and as with any challenging precision art, I developed my craft and voice by doing, knowing that a screenwriter only excels by hard work and practice.

The LMU Screenwriting Program gives you the opportunity to hone your skills and find your unique voice with a community of dedicated faculty, all industry professionals. Over four years, you will bond with your workshop colleagues and help each other evolve not only as visual storytellers but as compassionate and passionate human beings.  As Screenwriting Chair, I am thrilled to support you as you embark on your journey of self-discovery and creative development.  Inspired by our campus’ spectacular bluff view, you will write a new story for your life.  We look forward to fostering your vision and equipping you with the craft and confidence to launch an industry career.

Thank you for exploring this program. I encourage students to contact us for more information.
