Introducing the Documentary (Non-Fiction) Specialization in the MFA in Film Program at LMU

The Documentary (Non-Fiction) specialization at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television offers a dynamic pathway for aspiring filmmakers to master the art and craft of telling impactful real-world stories. This specialization is designed for those with a passion for truth-telling and an ambition to create documentaries that resonate deeply with audiences while addressing critical issues and narratives.

In this program, students will learn to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities of non-fiction filmmaking. Non-fiction stories are often shaped in real time, requiring directors to adapt to evolving circumstances and resource availability. The curriculum emphasizes the development of sophisticated techniques in narration, cinematography, editing, and sound design to craft compelling films with strong points of view.

Courses will provide hands-on experience in all stages of visual storytelling, from pre-production planning to post-production refinement. Specialized electives will focus on working with non-actors, directing with empathy and precision, and managing the intricacies of post-production.

Graduates of the program will leave with a robust portfolio that showcases their creative and technical skills. This includes three completed films, highlighted by a 15- to 20-minute thesis documentary. Additionally, students will produce professional promotional materials and a festival pitch plan, positioning them for success in the competitive documentary landscape.

The Documentary (Non-Fiction) specialization at LMU equips filmmakers with the tools, vision, and experience to become influential voices in the field, creating work that inspires, informs, and leaves a lasting impact.
