This page provides an overview of the registration process, including how to enroll in classes and what to do if you encounter an error message while adding a course. You will also find information on where to view your degree requirements and how to confirm that your courses are fulfilling those requirements. If you have questions that are not addressed on this page, please email sftvgradadvising@lmu.edu for assistance.
  • If you are new to PROWL or need a refresher, start with this guide available through the Office of the Registrar. The guide explains how to:

    • Search for courses
    • Find your registration appointment time
    • Check your account for holds
    • Register for courses
    • Review your schedule
    • Understand common registration error messages

  • If you see a hold on your account, you will need to clear it before you can register.

    Good to know

    • Only the office that placed the hold can remove it.
    • You can identify the office by clicking on the hold notification in PROWL.
    • To remove an advising hold, please schedule an appointment with the academic advisor here.
  • How to search

    1. Log in to PROWL.
    2. Select the Students tab.
    3. Under Students – Registration, choose Browse Courses.
    4. Select the correct semester.

    Search tips

    • Use department acronyms in the Subject field (for example, FTVS, PROD).
    • Use the Advanced Search option to access additional filters.
    • Check Open Sections Only to view courses with available seats or waitlist options.

    Review course details

    • Restrictions tab: Confirms eligibility based on degree level and program and indicates whether special permission is required. If you believe you should be able to register for a course but cannot complete the process due to course restrictions, please submit a Permission Override Request form to have your situation reviewed.
    • Prerequisites tab: Lists courses you must complete before registering.
    • Co‑requisites tab: Lists courses that require concurrent enrollment in one or more other classes. You will need to add all CRNs at the same time to register for these courses.

If no course description appears in PROWL, try searching the SFTV website or consult the Bulletin.

  • To ensure you receive prompt assistance, we created a webform that you can use to request a permission override for a class you are unable to join. The form helps us collect all the necessary information about your request upfront, which allows us to assist you promptly and efficiently. Please note that the form does not replace the academic planning conversations you have with your faculty advisor and the academic advisor. The form is available here.

Good to know: Please be prepared to provide course details, information about the PROWL error message you encountered, and the reason you are requesting an override. If you already discussed the request with your faculty advisor, you will have the option to include that information in an attachment.

Please note that we will no longer process permission override requests submitted via email.

    1. LMU Bulletin: You should consult the Bulletin before and during registration to ensure the courses you plan to take will help you meet your program requirements. To find your program requirements, use the main menu to navigate to the list of schools and colleges and click on the School of Film and Television. Select your program from the list, then click on the 4-Year Plan tab. You can find more information about your program requirements and learning outcomes in the other tabs in this section.
    2. Degree Works: This tool offers a comprehensive review of your academic progress toward meeting the requirements for your degree. The audit compares the courses you have taken with the requirements for the degree and identifies any remaining requirements you need to complete. Please see this resource for more information about Degree Works and how to access it.
  • If you temporarily lose access to PROWL and a course fills up:

    • Register for another available section of the same course, if possible.
    • For required courses with no availability, submit a permission override request.
    • For electives, select an alternate elective and continue checking PROWL for openings.
  • If you want to switch to a different section of the same course, please use the conditional add/drop option and use the instructions available here as guidance.

  • Please submit a permission override request once you secure the approval of your specialization coordinator.

  • SFTV graduate students are eligible to take 500, 600, 5000, and 6000-level courses for graduate credit.

If you receive a class level error message, the course you selected may be an undergraduate course that you are not eligible to take.

  • A time conflict occurs when a class meeting time overlaps with another class meeting time, or when one class ends at the same time as another class begins. To register for both classes, you should register for one of the courses first then discuss receiving approval from the instructor of this course and the instructor of the course you are hoping to add.

Once you receive approval from both instructors, you can submit a Time Conflict form through the Registrar’s forms.

  • The list of faculty advisors for all graduate programs is available here. You can also find it in Degree Works.
