Academic Policies & Procedures

The following academic policies and procedures are the most common topics we will often receive questions on from our students. You can review each drop-down section for an overview on that academic policy or procedure, and email sftv-advising@lmu.edu if you have any further questions. Please note while our website covers the most basic information on these policies and procedures, it’s always best to review the most current university bulletin for reference. You can find the current and past university bulletins through the Office of the Registrar’s website.

  • Taking a course for Credit/No Credit is different from taking a course for a Letter Grade. Letter-graded courses have an impact on your LMU GPA while Credit/No Credit courses do not. Students can find more information about taking courses for Credit/No Credit on the most current university bulletin.

  • Many students consider switching their major or pursuing an additional major or minor program throughout their undergraduate careers at LMU. The process to add a major or minor to your degree can vary across programs and colleges/schools. If you’re interested in adding another major or minor, we recommend reviewing the college’s website first for any information on the internal admission process before reaching out to the school’s advising office for more information.

If you are interested in pursuing a major or minor with SFTV, you can find more information on the Internal Admission webpage.

  • Degree Works is a degree audit that will show LMU students their academic progress towards their particular degree program. It is a helpful tool for students to understand how their courses are being applied to their degree requirements and whether they are on track to graduate. We recommend reviewing the Office of the Registrar’s website for more information on how to use the software.

  • Students can find more information on incomplete grades on the most current university bulletin.

  • Students may be eligible to late add a course to their schedule once the regular add/drop deadline has passed at the beginning of the semester. You can find the exact date of the deadline on the academic calendar and more information on the process of late adding a course on the most current university bulletin.

  • A Leave of Absence (LOA) may be granted to a student who applies for a temporary break from studies for up to two years or four semesters. A student on a processed LOA retains their admitted status; however, they do not have the rights and privileges of registered students as they are currently not attending classes. Please review the most current university bulletin for a full overview on how you can take a leave of absence from LMU.

  • Students taking fewer than the minimum 12 hours required in a semester are considered part-time and pay a flat rate per hour/credit for the semester. If you would like to be considered a part-time student, make sure to only register in the number of credits you’re hoping to be in for the upcoming semester and the Student Accounts Office will adjust your tuition and fees accordingly.

Please note you may not qualify for all University activities and benefits, such as eligibility for financial aid, on-campus housing, and intercollegiate athletic competition as a part-time student. Please make sure to consult those applicable offices for further questions on how going part-time may affect you.

  • Any holds on a student’s record for academic, financial, student conduct, or other reasons may inhibit eligibility for registration. You can see if you have any registration holds by going to your PROWL account, clicking on the ‘Student Profile’ tab and then clicking on the ‘Holds’ tab next to the ‘Registration Notices’ tab on the top right-hand side. We recommend students contact the office that placed the registration hold as soon as possible to prevent any issues with registration.

  • Students can find more information on the repeat policy on the most current university bulletin.

  • The evaluation of transfer courses occurs when students request to have their courses, that were completed at other institutions, reviewed to fulfill an SFTV major or minor requirement.

If you’re hoping to have a transfer course evaluated to fulfill an SFTV major or minor requirement, please fill out our SFTV Syllabus Evaluation form and attach a copy of the syllabus that was used for your course at the time of attendance. Please note course descriptions will not be enough to evaluate your coursework and these syllabi will be reviewed by our SFTV Department Chairs.

If you’re hoping to have a transfer course evaluated for credits or your core curriculum, please consult the Office of the Registrar on their Transfer Course Review process.

  • A unit overload request is when undergraduate students would like to request to register in more than 18 hours within a semester. In order for an undergraduate student to enroll in 19 or more semester hours, the following criteria must be met:

    1. A 3.50 overall GPA
    2. A minimum of 15 semester hours completed during the prior full semester

Students can find more information about this process on the most current university bulletin and can submit a unit overload form through the Office of the Registrar’s website to submit their request.

  • Withdrawing from courses differs from withdrawing from the university. Withdrawing from a course means dropping a course from your schedule and receiving a grade of a ‘W’ on your transcript after the regular add/drop deadline at the beginning of a semester has passed. A withdrawal from the university is the permanent termination of the academic program, course of study, and the rights and privileges offered to currently registered students. A student who wishes to return to the University must reapply to the appropriate Admissions Office.

To withdraw from a course, students can go through their PROWL accounts under the ‘Register for Courses’ tab to initiate the action. To withdraw from the university, we recommend students review the most current university bulletin for more information on the policy and process on how to initiate the request.
